emotion, so alien to him, he had turned on her with anger. He left the library and paused before the grand piano in the drawing room. Slowly he sat down and picked out one or two notes. Out loud he said,
"Catherine." By some fantastic stroke of luck he had found the one person in the world for him. Her clear judgment, her understanding, her laughter; he never had to explain to Catherine. She always knew what he meant, just as he always understood her.
Which meant? Did she feel the same way about him? He remembered her tears this evening as she relentlessly did what she had come to do. He looked at his hands on the piano, and realized that of course she loved him. The thing between them existed because it was mutual. She understood him precisely because she loved him.
He mounted the stairs and stopped outside her door. He tapped lightly and heard Catherine's soft,
"Come in."
He set his candle down on a table and stood at the foot of her bed. Gray eyes, full of feeling, looked into gray. "I have just written to Davy," he said. "I asked him to make an appointment for me to see Canning."
She smiled. "I'm glad, James." The fullness of her emotions sounded in the aching beauty of her voice.
Allandale felt a quiver run through him, but continued.
"You were right, I'm afraid. I have been a poor friend. Instead of bearing witness for what was right, I have been—sulking.''
Catherine's gaze was clear. "You haven't been sulking, James. I just said that to try to shock you. But,"
her voice was very gentle, "you must stop feeling guilty for being alive. Guilt is a totally destructive emotion.
Dying in Spain wouldn't have solved anything. Perhaps you survived for a purpose."
He looked suddenly young and vulnerable. "My little Catherine," his voice had an odd laugh, "is there nothing that escapes you?" He moved toward her and gently reached out his hand to touch her hair.
"Good night, my heart."
Catherine looked after him, a thoughtful expression on her young face. Suddenly, she broke into a radiant smile and snuggled down under the covers. "Aunt Louisa," she spoke softly, "I think perhaps you were right."
